Becoming
A meditation on formation through subtraction.
In Becoming, Ava Bock pairs two intimately connected works—Designing Myself, a cut-paper sculpture, and Me, Myself, and I, its sculptural evolution carved from solid black acrylic. Beginning as a fragile hand-cut template, the paper form becomes a blueprint for transformation. The resulting triptych—precisely waterjet-carved—embodies both continuity and change, tracing the tension between self-construction and self-erasure.
(2019)
Me – First Acrylic Layer The most open panel in the triptych. Represents the version of self shown to others, approachable, intentional, and carefully composed.
Myself – Second Acrylic Layer Central panel of the sculpture. Reflects a more actual state of being. I am more closed and introspective, revealing a guarded presence behind the outward form.
I – Third Acrylic Layer The most complex and least visible panel. Represents the innermost self—layered, private, and difficult to access.
Hand-cut sculpture on translucent paper. Serves as the original design for the sculptural triptych stacked between layers of glass pane.
Me, Myself and I – Full Sculpture (Front View) Freestanding sculptural triptych assembled from black acrylic layers. Captures the evolution from outward appearance to inner truth.
Me, Myself and I – Side Rear View Angled view of the sculpture showing depth, alignment, and the architectural layering of identity through form.
