After the Divide — Light IV
Light IV brings the surface of Shedding into focus. Broad white forms curve around open space while scratches, abrasions, discoloration, and evidence of handwork remain clearly visible. Light moving across those surfaces reveals the sculpture as something that has been made, damaged, handled, and made again.
Created after Shedding was damaged during Hurricane Helene and subsequently repaired and reworked, the photograph does not attempt to visually erase what happened to the sculpture. Instead, those changes become part of the image.
Within After the Divide, Light IV focuses on the physical evidence of continuation. The repaired surface is neither hidden nor treated as a flaw; it becomes part of the work's history and part of what the photograph asks the viewer to see.
Each photograph is part of After the Divide, a photographic series created from Shedding, an original sculpture that was damaged during Hurricane Helene and subsequently repaired and reworked. Rather than concealing the sculpture's history, the photographs preserve its altered surfaces, marks, openings, and intersections as part of the work.
